Edge Options for Patches
There are three types of edging to choose from for your custom badges. There is no difference in price, but each has their own benefits.
We will recommend best suited option for your design, but let us know if you have a preference.
Merrow edge
These badges have over-locked stitching around the edge.
Since the badges need to be fed throuh a sewing machine, we can only use this for simple shapes such as circles or squares.
This is the best option for woven badges, and is great for embroidered badges too.
Laser cut edge
These badges are cut to shape with a laser, so are cut to a preprogrammed set shape, which allows for more creative shapes than merrow edges.
- For embroidered badges, there is a small fabric border around the design becuase if we cut too close. the stitches will fray. Typically this fabric is twill, but we can also use felt.
- For woven badges, we would add a coloured border to allow for slight variances in alignment, but the badges have a completely flat texture.
This is the edge that we now use for the majority of our own embroidered badges, because our customers generally find this edge the easiest to sew through.
For woven badges, we would recommend a merrow edge because it feels more 'finished', but we can use a laser cut edge for complex shapes.
Heat cut edge (embroidery only)
These badges have a stitched edge that is cut to shape by hand with a hot tool.
This allows for badges to be more creative shapes, and they can even have internal areas cut out to make holes.
Heat cut embroidered badges produce the most 'premium' feel. Until 2024, we used this method for all of our own badges.
